Roaring Plains West Wilderness is a protected high-country backcountry area in the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia within Monongahela National Forest. Established on March 30, 2009, it preserves 6,820 acres of windswept plateau, cliffs, and rocky plains that include Mount Porte Crayon and form part of one of the highest upland landscapes in the eastern United States. Its high elevation, wet ground, and severe weather create sphagnum bogs, red spruce forests, and dense shrub thickets that support species including snowshoe hare, bobcat, fisher, and the federally threatened Cheat Mountain salamander. Heavy snowfall, headwater wetlands, and trail connections to nearby wild areas make it both an important ecological preserve and a key recreation link.
