The Vogele and Columbia Buildings were two-story native limestone buildings constructed in 1901. The Vogele building had a rock-faced coursed ashlar finish visible below and above two arched bays, each with stone relieving round arches, with a stone checkerboard pattern around the bays, decorative stonework embellishing the entablature, columns on the north extending from ground level to above the cornice line to form decorative caps, and a decorative stone cap in the center of the cornice line with a stone plaque bearing the date 1901 and the name C.E. Vogele. H. Perlstein owned the building from 1918 until 1937 and operated a general store there, and in 1919 Dr. Hazen and Dr. Gowey established an "up to the minute" emergency hospital over Perlstein's store, equipped with four rooms to care for emergency cases and placed under the charge of Miss Pieler, an experienced nurse. The Columbia building was identical to the Vogele building and had a decorative stone cap in the center of the cornice line with a stone plaque bearing the date 1901 and the name J. C. Columbia. Columbia was one of the community's early businessmen, having made the run in 1893, and in 1899 he owned a lumberyard one block north of the courthouse square and one-half block from the post office. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on September 1, 1849, he was educated in the Indian Mission Schools of Kansas, married Miss Angeline Wright of Missouri in 1876, and had four children, two sons and two daughters. He was a member and trustee of the Methodist Church and a Royal Arch Mason and K.P. In 1901 he built a dry goods, ladies' and gent's furnishings, and fine footwear store that was among the very first in bringing the latest styles and ideas to the community. In 1902 he added a forty-foot extension to accommodate the new bowling alley of Witham and Bohrier, and in 1907 the building also boasted the first electric sign on Main Street. Due to poor maintenance, the buildings became unstable and were removed in August 2002.
