Fairsted in Brookline, Massachusetts, preserves the home and office Frederick Law Olmsted established in 1883, creating what is described as the world’s first full-scale professional landscape design office. Centered on the Clark homestead, an 1810 farmhouse, the property became the working base of the Olmsted firm and later of his sons and successors, extending the family’s influence across the United States and beyond. Its office complex survives largely unchanged from the firm’s peak and holds nearly 1,000,000 original design records for major works including Central Park, the White House and U.S. Capitol grounds, Yosemite Valley, and major urban park systems.
