In Brookline, Massachusetts, the Larz Anderson Auto Museum grew from Larz Anderson and Isabel Weld Perkins’s private collection, begun with a Winton horseless carriage in 1899 and expanded over decades with motorcars, carriages, and sleighs. Their grand 1888 carriage house, designed by Edmund M. Wheelwright, evolved with the addition of a garage as automobiles replaced horse-drawn travel. Opened to public tours by 1927, the collection became one of the nation’s earliest and remains notable as the oldest collection of motorcars in the United States. Fourteen original Anderson cars survive, and the museum continues as a nonprofit center for automotive history, exhibitions, archives, and public programs.
