On May 14, 1966, members of the Rock Island Arsenal, its tenant agencies, and surrounding communities held a ceremony on this site to mark the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Fort Armstrong as a symbol of a free people. To pass on this heritage and preserve mementos of their own time, they encased artifacts of that generation in stone beneath the site and duly recorded them in the John M. Browning Museum for future generations.
