Lime Island State Recreation Area is an undeveloped Michigan state park of 980 acres on Lime Island in the St. Marys River near its mouth. With just five primitive boat-in campsites and no other developed facilities, it remains notably sparse. The state bought the island in 1982, and in 2011 transferred it from the Forest Management Division to the Parks Department, making it the state’s 99th park unit and preserving it after proposed campground closures during funding cuts. The island also preserves evidence of earlier use as Woodland Indian summer camps, and later for a lime kiln, ship bunkering, and a resort, while supporting wildlife and low-impact recreation.
