The Whitefield House was founded in 1740 by George Whitefield, bought by the Moravians in 1741, and completed in 1743. It served as the first place of worship and home of the clergy, became a nursery for children of colonists in 1749, housed a theological seminary from 1855 to 1858, and in 1868 became the Missionary Home and Moravian Historical Society.
