Elephant Rock is a well-known sandstone formation in Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park, near the park’s east entrance in the Mojave Desert. Named for a natural arch that resembles an elephant, it became an officially recognized place name through the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. Though classified as a summit, it rises only modestly above Valley of Fire Road. The formation is made of Aztec Sandstone, created from desert sand dunes that lithified during the Early Jurassic about 180 to 190 million years ago. Its runoff drains east toward Lake Mead, and a short trail leads visitors to this widely photographed landmark.
