Las Vegans claimed to have originated the all-weather route between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. From the beginning, the Arrowhead Trail was a grassroots effort, promoted by various chambers of commerce and built in part by volunteer local citizens. Charles H. Bigelow of Los Angeles gave it great publicity by driving the entire route many times in 1915 and 1916 in his twin-six Packard, “Cactus Kate.” The section between St. Thomas and Las Vegas was built in 1915, completing that part of the trail, which in its day marked a milestone of progress.
