Acadian exiles arrived from Maryland in 1767 and received Spanish land grants, as did the church. The church was built by Louis LeConte, a builder from Lafourche, between November 1774 and July 1776 with help from the settlers. The Acadians brought and maintained their church records from St. Charles Aux Mines, Parish, Acadia.
