Military
On December 7, 1968, in Bayou Goula Bend, the Coast Guard Cutter White Alder sank after colliding with the Formosan freighter Helena. Seventeen Coast Guardsmen lost their lives in the collision, and three crewmen survived. Only two bodies were recovered, and it is believed that fifteen men remain entombed in the wreckage at the bottom of the river opposite this structure.
