Painted Rock Petroglyph Site in southwestern Arizona preserves about 800 images pecked into basalt boulders on a granite outcrop, forming one of the region’s largest concentrations of rock art. Usually considered a Hohokam site, it lies on the western edge of that cultural world, where Hohokam, Patayan, and possibly older Archaic influences meet. The arid landscape near the Gila River corridor supported long human occupation, with nearby Hohokam village ruins showing centuries of settlement and farming. Later travelers also passed this landmark, from Juan Bautista de Anza to emigrants, settlers, and World War II tank training forces. Its archaeological importance has led to ongoing preservation efforts and protected status.
