The Village of Christiana was a colonial river port and crossroads, later recognized as a National Historic District. Founded in 1684 and named for Queen Christina of Sweden, it was the home of Col. John Read. In March 1781, the Marquis de Lafayette and 1500 troops landed there, and it was a major colonial shipping port.
