E. P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park is a 550-acre Kentucky state park in Louisville’s Freys Hill area on the former grounds of Central State Hospital. Opened in 1974, it was named for Jefferson County judge-executive Erbon Powers “Tom” Sawyer, who died in a 1969 car accident while still in office. The park is notable as a major urban public recreation area with unusually extensive facilities, including indoor courts, an Olympic-sized pool, trails, sports fields, a BMX track, a model aircraft airfield, a dog park, an archery range, and the Louisville Astronomical Society’s Urban Astronomy Center. A proposed 2004 land swap would have made it a city park, but it remained in Kentucky’s state park system.
