Greenbrier County was formed in 1778 from Botetourt and Montgomery and was named for the river that drains it. The county had many pioneer forts and saw many bloody Indian battles. It is home to the world-famed White Sulphur and other mineral springs. Virginia was named for Queen Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen of England. It was the site of the first permanent English settlement in America in 1607, was one of the 13 original colonies, and was the birthplace of eight United States presidents.
