Forrest H. Dutlinger Natural Area in Clinton County, Pennsylvania, within Susquehannock State Forest, protects 1,521 acres, including a 158-acre old-growth forest known for its exceptionally large trees. It is named for Commonwealth forester Forrest H. Dutlinger, who worked from 1908 to 1958 as the region struggled with heavy clear-cutting, lack of reforestation, widespread wildfires, and chestnut blight. Dutlinger became known for helping restore local forests and for efforts to limit the blight’s spread. The area’s old-growth stand survived largely by chance, apparently spared because a surveying error led to a boundary dispute between two lumber companies.
