Humboldt Redwoods State Park is the largest redwood park in the California state park system, stretching along U.S. Highway 101 and the Avenue of the Giants for 32 miles. More than 53,000 acres are preserved here, including about 17,000 acres of ancient coast redwoods, the world’s tallest trees, which grow to more than 360 feet and can live as long as 2,000 years. The park preserves a living remnant of what was once the greatest forest on earth. The Avenue of the Giants is a 32-mile scenic highway through dozens of redwood groves, running alongside Highway 101 and the Eel River as a scenic route through the park and nearby communities, with trails, picnic areas, swimming holes, campgrounds, and a visitor center.
