Philmont Scout Ranch in northeastern New Mexico is a vast Scouting America high-adventure base in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, widely regarded as the world’s largest youth camp and a flagship destination for backpacking and outdoor training. Its lands reflect a long history of Native presence, the Santa Fe Trail, ranching, and gold mining before Waite Phillips assembled much of the area and began donating it to the Boy Scouts of America in 1938. The ranch’s rugged terrain, major landmarks, and unusual historical and natural features support treks, training, museum and library programs, ranch work, and conservation, making it a place where recreation, history, and stewardship meet.
