The Tooth of Time is a prominent pinkish-gray rock formation on Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron in northeastern New Mexico, notable for its sharp shape and dramatic rise above the valley floor. Formed during the Paleogene Period some 22 to 40 million years ago, it is a dacite porphyry igneous intrusion left exposed after erosion wore away softer surrounding rock. Its sheer face rises about 2,500 feet and supports little plant life, heightening its stark appearance. Long an important landmark on the Santa Fe Trail, it signaled the final seven-day push to Santa Fe for traders. Today it is a scenic destination and climbing site.
