Mount Phillips, in northeastern New Mexico’s Cimarron Range within the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, is Philmont Scout Ranch’s second-highest peak and an important part of the ranch’s history. Formerly called Clear Creek Mountain, it was renamed in 1960 for Waite Phillips, whose land donation helped create Philmont Scout Ranch for Scouting America. Rising to 11,742 feet, the mountain is largely pink gneiss and is reached by a moderate rocky hike from Comanche Peak or by a newer switchback trail from Clear Creek. Its summit area has sparse trees, broad views in most directions, and a flagpole marking the true summit.
