Nicholas Paul Smith's hardware store became an important business in Bend at a time when supplies had previously been brought in from Shaniko by stagecoach. Quick to spot a trend, Smith was the first to sell gasoline to the growing number of automobile owners, and patch marks on the side pavement show where he installed the first gas pumps in Bend. N.P. Smiths Pioneer Hardware still stands as the oldest wooden building remaining in downtown Bend.
