Coleman County was formed from Travis and Brown counties, created on February 1, 1858, and organized on October 6, 1864. It was named in honor of Robert M. Coleman, who lived from 1799 to 1837, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a hero of San Jacinto, and organizer of the first company of Texas Rangers. Coleman was approved as the county seat on April 28, 1876.
