Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge is an 8,834-acre refuge in Montana west of Kalispell along U.S. Highway 2. Established in 1999, it is among the newest units in the National Wildlife Refuge System and is managed within the Western Montana National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Formerly the Lost Trail Ranch, a large horse and cattle property with late-19th-century roots, the area now preserves prairie and wetlands that support diverse wildlife. More than 100 bird species have been recorded there, and the surrounding region also supports mammals ranging from deer, elk, moose, and black bear to grizzly bear, gray wolf, lynx, and wolverine.
