Dedicated as a tribute to the sturdy whalemen who early won fame for New Bedford and to their successors who, inheriting ideals and resourcefulness, gave the city new prominence by creating a great manufacturing center. It was the gift of George D. Barnard of Saint Louis, Missouri, a native of New Bedford.
