Nockamixon State Park in northern Bucks County is a major recreation area centered on Lake Nockamixon, a reservoir formed by damming Tohickon Creek as part of a mid-20th-century Pennsylvania plan led by Dr. Maurice K. Goddard. Proposed in 1958 and opened in December 1973, the project transformed the Tohickon Valley and took its name from a Lenape word meaning “place of soft soil.” The park also includes historic Native American sites. Boating, fishing, horseback riding, hunting, seasonal pool use, winter ice activities, and occasional whitewater releases on Tohickon Creek make it one of southeastern Pennsylvania’s most popular parks.
