In 1799, Pennsylvania-German farmers mounted an armed resistance to the 1798 federal house tax in an early challenge to the federal government's authority. Soldiers suppressed the uprising, and leader John Fries was arrested for treason, condemned to death, and pardoned by President John Adams.
