During World War II, men and women from the borough of Parkesburg and its vicinity served in the armed forces of the United States, including others who served in the Merchant Marines, and Anthony Banach, Wilbert W. Conover, John Clarke, William C. Hoyer, and Robert Grier Montgomery made the supreme sacrifice. In 1949, the citizens of the borough of Parkesburg erected a memorial in their honor.
