A portion of a World Trade Center base column structure is displayed here. Nicknamed "trees" or "forks," these formed the backbone of the lower stories around the circumference of each tower. Some of these columns were the only structures left standing when the towers collapsed on September 11, 2001. This tree came from part of the North Tower. The steel for these trees was melted, rolled, and cut to shape at the Coatesville steel mill, then Lukens Steel, for welding and setting into the buildings. The New York Port Authority donated this tree to the Graystone Society, which provided it to the company as part of this memorial, bringing it home to Coatesville.
