Hodges Gardens in west central Louisiana united a botanical garden, recreation area, and wilderness landscape on a former quarry site shaped by a much older regional history that included Native American presence, Spanish and French exploration, the Neutral Strip, and El Camino Real. Developed by Andrew Jackson Hodges Sr. and Nona Trigg Hodges, the gardens opened to the public in 1956 and featured lakes, waterfalls, trails, greenhouses, flower beds, overlooks, and camping. After joining the Louisiana state park system in 2007 and reopening in 2008, the property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. It closed in 2018 and remains inaccessible.
