Stafford Village Four Corners was the site of the first settlement on the Holland Purchase in 1798. Originally known as Transit, it was renamed Stafford in 1841 after settlement by a colony of Devonshire English people. Buildings of historic and architectural interest there include the Town Hall, c. 1850; the I.O.O.F. Hall and store, 1890; the Episcopal Church, 1842, and Parish House, 1848; and two residences located on the S.W. Corner, 1809, and the S.E. Corner, c.1932, of the first Transit Road. Memorial Park is the site of an early stage coach tavern dating to 1804. The place was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
