Built in 1828-29 by John Gayle, sixth governor of Alabama, Gayle - Tunstall House was the birthplace of Amelia Gayle Gorgas, wife of Gen. Josiah Gorgas, Chief of Ordnance, CSA, and mother of Wm. Crawford Gorgas, US Surgeon General who freed the Canal Zone of yellow fever. For many years it was also the home of the Hobson - Tunstall family, including Wiley C. Tunstall, a member of the first Alabama R. R. Commission, and his son Alfred Moore Tunstall, an Alabama legislator for 39 years and twice Speaker of the House.
