Chopaka Mountain is a summit on the leeward flank of the North Cascades in north-central Washington whose upper slopes and summit in Okanogan County are protected as a 2,764-acre Natural Area Preserve known for mountain goats and rare plant communities. Its name is linked to regional Indigenous tradition, with records from nearby Chopaka in British Columbia connecting it either to an Okanagan hunter or a maiden transformed into stone, while Fred Beckey interpreted it as meaning “high mountain.” The mountain also marks a turning point in Washington wildlife history, as the state’s last surviving native herd of bighorn sheep lived here until it was hunted out in the 1920s.
