The Lincoln Highway Association, formed in 1913, promoted and procured a route from New York to California, while the Dixie Highway Association, formed in 1915, worked similarly on routes from Canada to Florida. The highways intersected here and demonstrated the success of private organizations, individuals, and local governments in advancing the goals of the Good Roads Movement. In the 1880s, the popularity of the bicycle increased public demand for improved roads, which were still built and maintained by local governments and residents. The transportation of agricultural products, free federal rural mail delivery, and the mass production of automobiles increased demand for concrete roads and resulted in state and federal highway programs by the 1920s.
