On his last Kentucky raid, Confederate General John H. Morgan and his raiders entered the state on June 1, 1864, moved through this area, took Mount Sterling on June 8, lost it on the 9th, then took Lexington on the 10th and Cynthiana on the 11th. The next day, U.S.A. forces under General S.G. Burbridge defeated the Confederates, and Morgan retreated, reaching Virginia on June 20. The raiders never recovered from this reverse.
