Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church was established in 1833 when James and Susannah Vaughn donated 5.7 acres of land to the congregation. After Judge John Perkins donated an adjacent 5-acre plot in 1851, the church was moved and the original site was designated as a burial ground named in honor of the Vaughn family. The current church building was constructed circa 1892 and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in July 2007.
