Dyer County was established in 1823 and named in honor of Colonel Robert Henry Dyer, who served valiantly under General Andrew Jackson in the Natchez Expedition, the Creek War, the War of 1812, including the decisive Battle of New Orleans, and the Seminole War of 1818. Lauderdale County was established in 1835 and named in honor of Colonel James Lauderdale, who was killed leading a charge by his regiment of Tennessee troops against the British at the Battle of New Orleans on December 23, 1814.
