Grand Junction’s arts center grew from local art clubs that began in the nineteen twenties and developed into a formal organization in nineteen fifty-three. Built through years of community fundraising, it first operated with a small collection stored in public spaces before opening in a remodeled house in nineteen sixty. A larger building opened in nineteen seventy, and a major expansion in the nineteen eighties added galleries and other facilities but brought financial strain during the oil shale collapse. Backed by donations, exhibitions, and local support, the center expanded its collection to more than six hundred works and remains an important museum, teaching space, and cultural hub for western Colorado.
