The City of Talladega was incorporated in 1835, and not long after its founding the Square became the town center. The Talladega Courthouse, built in 1836, is the oldest courthouse in continuous use in Alabama. It survived a tornado on May 11, 1912, that destroyed the clock tower, and a fire on March 13, 1925, that severely damaged the structure. After the fire, Chattanooga architect R. H. Hunt redesigned the building, and during rebuilding the east and west entrances were enclosed and a Seth Thomas Clock was installed in the clock tower. Other buildings in the historic Talladega Courthouse Square include the original Henderson Drug Store from 1847, the Isbell Bank from 1869, the first City Hall from 1892, the Kenwin Building from 1900, the Federal Post Office from 1912, and the Ritz Theatre from 1936. The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
