By 1898, early tourists' glowing reports had stirred curiosity about the Grand Canyon and helped launch tourism there. Visitors arriving at Grandview were greeted by Pete Berry, a miner turned hotel manager, at his Grand View Hotel and taken to the canyon rim, where the spectacle quickly eclipsed the hardship of a 12-hour stagecoach ride from Flagstaff and invited thoughts of a mule ride into the canyon the next day. Because mining was only briefly profitable, Berry and other entrepreneurs turned to tourism; in 1893 he offered crude lodging in a cabin at Grandview and began guiding mule-riding patrons into the canyon, then built a two-story log hotel in 1897 and later added a large frame building. Until 1901, Grandview was the Grand Canyon's most popular tourist destination, known for the best hotel and, some said, the best trail, but after the Santa Fe Railroad reached Grand Canyon Village 11 miles west in 1901, far fewer tourists chose the jolting stagecoach trip to Grandview. Today little remains of Pete Berry's hotel on the rim.
