Banner Peak is a twelve-thousand-nine-hundred-forty-two-foot Sierra summit in California’s Ritter Range, second in height there only to Mount Ritter and set within the Ansel Adams Wilderness near Mammoth Lakes. It is especially known for rising above a striking group of alpine lakes, including Garnet Lake, Lake Ediza, Thousand Island Lake, Lake Catherine, and Shadow Lake, with glaciers still clinging to its slopes. Willard D. Johnson named it in 1883 after seeing a banner cloud stream from the summit. Shaped by Pacific storms forced upward over the Sierra, the peak remains a prominent destination for hikers, climbers, and photographers.
