Mount Ritter, a 13,149-foot peak in California’s high Sierra, is the highest mountain in Madera County and the highest and most prominent summit in the Ritter Range within the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Its dark rock, great height, and relative isolation give it a commanding presence. Near the center of the range, it is closely linked with Banner Peak and the Minarets, and the distinctive Ritter-Banner profile can be seen from far along the Sierra crest. Josiah Whitney named the mountain for Carl Ritter, his former teacher in Berlin, and it remains one of the central Sierra’s major summits.
