Pioneer settlers arrived in the area from North and South Carolina as early as 1808. Civil War soldiers camped here on their way to Clarksville and Nashville. The community was named when a post office opened in 1882. In 1883 the village had blacksmith shops, a grist and saw mill, a general store, a school, Methodist and Baptist churches, and the Doddsville Tennessee Central Railroad station. Hagewood's Ferry on the Cumberland River operated until 1958.
