Mound Bottom is a major prehistoric Native American site on a defended bend of the Harpeth River near Kingston Springs, occupied during the Mississippian period from roughly A.D. 1000 to 1300. Together with the nearby Pack Site, it formed the Great Mound Group, likely occupied at the same time and possibly founded by people from outside the region. Its ceremonial center featured a large flat-topped mound, as many as 13 smaller mounds, and a 7-acre plaza, with houses, cemeteries, and fields beyond. A key center of the Middle Cumberland Mississippian culture, it later declined as political power shifted elsewhere and is now preserved as part of Harpeth River State Park.
