Researchers estimate that Haas Cemetery contains between 180 and 300 total interments. Among the identified individuals buried there, 45% died before age 18, 21% lived to age 70 or older, and 34 was the average age at death. Some graves are now marked only by indentations in the soil because their markers are gone, while other headstones are weathered and unreadable, and others survive as early works of rural art. A headstone inscription for Martha Ann Haas reads, “O Let our thoughts and wishes fly Above these gloomy shades, To those bright worlds beyond the sky Which sorrow ne'er invades. There joys unseen by mortal eyes, Or reason's feeble ray In ever blooming prospect rise, Exposed to no decay.”
