In 1932, John Fleming and I. S. Howald bought the store then known as Peck Hardware. It was called Fleming and Howald until 1946, when Mr. Howald sold his interest and the business became Fleming Hardware. Later its name was changed to Fleming Variety. In 1954, a fire devastated the business, and the store relocated to North Main Street, where the present-day Midway Café is located. After nearly two years there, it bought Downing's 5 & 10 Cents Store and moved to its present location. Photographs show John H. Fleming, Edna Fleming, May Grover, and Jennie Glassey in 1939 or 1940; the Benowitz family of Rob, Alan, Karel, and Laura; and John H. Fleming, Grace Fleming Benowitz, and others in 1939.
