Montauk State Park lies at the headwaters of the Current River in Missouri and is known for cold, spring-fed waters that support a trout hatchery and fishing for rainbow and brown trout. Acquired in 1926, the park also preserves an older milling and recreation landscape. Its Old Mill, built in 1896 to replace an 1870 mill, ceased operation in 1927 and was rehabilitated in 1935 by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 1770. That company also built a stone dam, spillway, and rustic open shelter in the 1930s. Together with its major springs, these features reflect both the park’s fishing reputation and the Ozarks’ early 20th-century development for public recreation.
