The last organized Confederate resistance occurred here as Federal troops pushed south along the Texas Road toward Honey Springs Depot and encountered the 1st Choctaw and Chickasaw Regiment. Armed largely with shotguns and antiquated weapons, the regiment stalled the advancing Federal army and bought time for other soldiers to retreat while Brig. Gen. Cooper tried desperately to save his artillery and supply train. Federal soldiers saw smoke rising from buildings the Confederates had set ablaze at Honey Springs Depot as they pressed the attack and repulsed several determined stands. In retreat, the Confederates burned commissary buildings and destroyed supplies while enemy cavalry remained to the front. About 4 p.m., General Cabell came into sight with 3,000 reinforcements, but Maj. Gen. James G. Blunt, with ammunition nearly exhausted, chose to bivouac on the field and risk battle the next morning. Capt. Gillette's squadron briefly held the enemy advance in check, and the Choctaws under Col. Walker charged a battery on the timbered ridge 1,000 yards north of Honey Springs, checked the enemy's advance, and gave their war-whoop as they attacked.
