Albion River Bridge carries California State Route 1 across the Albion River near Albion on the Mendocino Coast and stands out as the highway’s only remaining wooden bridge. Earlier bridges had crossed the river since 1861, but their low position forced steep, dangerous descents and climbs along the bluffs. Opened in 1944, the present high-level bridge was shaped by World War II shortages, using mostly salvaged wood and a reused steel truss from a Feather River bridge. Later replacement proposals drew local opposition, and the span gained historic recognition with its addition to the National Register of Historic Places on July 31, 2017.
