Navarro River Redwoods State Park extends about 11 miles along both banks of the Navarro River in Mendocino County, linking a redwood-lined river corridor with the Pacific coast. Though heavily logged in the 19th century, it retains the character of a North Coast grove and supports salmon, steelhead, otters, birds, deer, and marine life near the mouth. The lower end also preserves remains of a lumber settlement that grew after Charles Fletcher settled the estuary in 1851 and a mill opened there in 1861, then declined after the mill closed in 1893 and the 1906 earthquake and fires. Later park acquisitions and preservation joined its scenic and historic significance.
