McAfee Knob is a prominent mountain feature on Catawba Mountain in Virginia, northwest of Roanoke, known for its projecting rocky ledge and broad views over the Catawba Valley, North Mountain, Tinker Cliffs, and the Roanoke Valley. Rising to 3,197 feet, it is widely regarded as one of the Appalachian Trail’s signature viewpoints and often called its most photographed spot. Named for settler James McAfee, who came to the Catawba Valley in the late 1730s, it has become a major hiking destination. Its popularity, reinforced by the 2015 film A Walk in the Woods, has also led to organized trail stewardship and protection.
